About the Course

In this first module, we’ll cover the logistics basics in order to provide you with a solid foundation on which to build your understanding of the ins and outs of distilling spirits. Important requirements of distilling which fall under the purview of the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau—or TTB—a part of the United States Department of the Treasury will be covered namely:

  • licensing

  • reporting

  • formulas

  • definitions

  • label approval

An overview of distilling equipment is covered at length: from hoses, to still types to hydrometers. Standards of Identity is outlined as the governmental definition of spirit types detailing spirits such as (vodka, whiskey, rum, etc. And finally, water profile importance is presented: great spirits begin with quality water. You will learn how water is used throughout the spirit-making process and what minerals are important and how to use them.
